24-Year-Old Man Killed, 6 Others Injured in ‘Senseless’ Shooting at North Carolina College

One man has died and six others have been injured after a shooting at Elizabeth City State University’s campus in North Carolina in the early hours of Sunday, April 27, the institution has confirmed.

In a statement, the university announced that the incident occurred at the campus center following Yard Fest, the final event of the historically Black university’s weeklong Viking Fest celebration.

“Six individuals were injured during the incident. Four sustained gunshot wounds, including three ECSU students,” the release read. “Additionally, two other ECSU students were injured during the subsequent commotion.”

The university went on to say that none of the injuries were considered life-threatening and that the six people were taken to a nearby hospital.

“A 24-year-old man, who was not an ECSU student, was pronounced deceased,” the university revealed. “His identity is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.”

“The university is deeply saddened by this senseless act,” the university wrote in a subsequent update. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all members of the Viking community affected by this tragedy.”

Following the incident, the campus had a lockdown and issued a “shelter-in-place order for all students,” they noted.

This was lifted later on Sunday after authorities determined it was safe on campus, per NBC News.

Alongside the ECSU Police, the Elizabeth City Police Department, Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office, Camden County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the case.

According to NBC, the school also said that they had increased the number of patrols on campus to monitor the location in the wake of the incident.

PEOPLE has contacted the  Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office, Camden County Sheriff’s Office, and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) for further updates, but did not immediately hear back.

NBC News notes that Elizabeth City State University has 2,300 students and is about 50 miles south of Norfolk, Virginia

CNN reports that the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident alongside local authorities. The agency asked members of the public to submit “any information, videos or pictures” related to the shooting, per the outlet.
